The heroine's perception of the relationship between Humans and Creatures is complicated by the fact that she shares both their blood. Her mother was a Human scientist seduced by Jack, a Creature interested in producing offspring with the advantageous intellect possessed by Humans.
Desperate for her father's affection Irene absorbs any information about Humans she comes across, spending most of her childhood hunting the halls of an abandoned base for clues that will help her father become leader of the Creatures. When a Cat Tribe man named Arminius enters her world Irene's beliefs about her father are challenged.
As she struggles to come to terms with the perspective of the Creatures fighting her father Irene also has to deal with the fact that she is becoming a woman in an uncertain world.

Arminius Tanner (Black Panther/Human)
Although he's worked for the Cat Tribe's leader for years Arminius has only been an adult for a year when he's sent on a mission to abduct Jack's Human daughter.
Opposing Jack's greed is his primary goal but once he encounters the man's feisty daughter his attention is diverted. Taken by her strength of character and generous heart Arminius takes it upon himself to protect her from their troubled world, his affection for her growing the deeper into chaos they descend.

Orphaned by a raid on the Squirrel Tribe this child is adopted by Arminius and Irene on their way to a Human base.
Initially filled with hate over the massacre of his family the child clings to the young adults whose support are the only stability remaining in his reality. Energetic with a playful nature the boy assists his companions in whatever manner he can, growing up as the story progresses.

Jack the Strong (Raven/Human)
Born of a union between a Human man and Creature woman from the Dolphin Tribe Irene's father wants to unify the Creatures under his leadership.
Preying on the resentment some Tribes feel towards the Cat Tribe (who are currently in charge) the half-breed man promises a world of freedom where even Humans are no threat. Fueled by passion for his kind as well as a need to rule over them Jack adopts whatever methods necessary to ensure his victory over Humans and Creatures alike.

Mentor to Arminius the jaguar man treats his half-breed friend like a younger sibling. Loyal to the leader of the Cat Tribe Tom orchestrates many of the defensive measures against Jack's assaults while also working with Arminius to monitor Human movements.
Denied his youthful sweetheart the man dedicated himself to protecting his Tribe as confrontations against Jack's supporters became more heated. Fearless and possessing a head for tactics the man is integral to the Cat Tribe's security.
