Cynthia Anastensia (The Goddess of Life)
Born during the colonisation of North America, this woman's illicit interactions with a man lead to her social ruin. Desperation prompts her to pray to Earth's gods for assistance which is given, but with a cost. Bestowed with immortality and the power to mold energy into physical Life, Cynthia determines to protect the beings of Earth. When energy-hungry Shadows threaten to consume not only hers, but every world in their galaxy she and her sister set-about inoculating key planets against the threat. After discovering a planet whose inhabitants live in relative harmony with these Shadows, the sisters gather a group to assist with their cause. Despite the necessity of such a move, Cynthia is troubled by the fact that any realtionships she forms with these people will result in grief when she inevitably outlives them.
Lilia Anastensia (The Goddess of Death)
Lilia's desire to control her own destiny results in her being granted the powers of Death, the ability to transition energy out of physical existence. Fiercely loyal and independent, Cynthia's younger sister orchestrates the implementation of their plans, providing a critical support to her sister as they cope with their new powers. Although she is not thrilled with the negative reactions physical beings display in her presence, the woman's dedication to protecting their galaxy from the all-consuming Shadows is essential to maintaining order in their newly formed group.
Ester Conner
During one of her excursions to monitor the changes affecting her home world, Cynthia encounters and unintentionally befriends the spirited Ester. After decades of keeping mortals at arms length, the Life goddess lets the seventeen-year-old into her heart and the two form a strong friendship. Upon learning that her companion is planning an expedition to Alesta, the world in which humans coexist with Shadows, Ester convinces Cynthia that she will be a bridge between the two teams. Alesta already has a connection to the Earth world through a television show chronicling the lives of several key figures the goddesses will be recruiting. An avid fan of the show, Ester is eager to participate in the mission and also meet the characters with whom she is already familiar.
Alvin Karnish / Acacius Alfawulf (The Wolf General)
Individuals in Alesta sometimes find themselves plagued by restless spirits. The natures of these spirits can work in harmony with their current hosts or attempt hostile take-overs to achieve their objectives. Alvin is a keyboardist in a fledgling rock band when he discovers that the legendary figure of Acacius the Wolf General has chosen him as a host. In his first life, Acacius, despite initially succumbing to the temptations of a corrupt state, ultimately triumphed over the malicious forces in his country's empire and ushered in an era of peace.
After Alvin and Acacius (who prefers the name Alfa) decide to collaborate in the uncovering of why Alfa has returned to a mortal body, they discover that several other spirits from that time period have also appeared and forcefully taken control over their hosts in a bid for power. Such aggressive spirits are referred to as Shadows. With the help of his friends, Alvin and his spirit manage to overcome and capture the malicious Shadows. Despite their triumph Alfa is still not at peace and continues traveling in Alvin's body when the Alestans are enlisted in the goddess' fight to save their galaxy.
Luke Leofwine / Shiawak
Forced to comply with the desires of his disgruntled spirit, Luke is a key figure in the uprising that threatens to unhinge the peace Alesta has known for nearly six hundred years. Unknown to Alvin's group prior to his involvement in the conflict, the young man nevertheless becomes a close friend to Alfa and Alvin once he begins to get his Shadow under control. Having demonstrated effective management of his aggressive spirit, Luke is allowed to walk free while the other perpetrators are securely detained. Although his restless spirit continues to pose a threat, his presence in the team organised by the goddesses is essential to providing each key world with an example of the energy signature possessed by aggressive Shadows.
