Chapters in Life

I've always thought of life as a saga. Sometimes a chapter in one's life goes on for years, sometimes days. What constitutes the beginning and end of these chapters is personal. Each person has the freedom to decide which are the events and moments with the most impact. I appreciate viewing life in this manner since it encourages analysis while fostering recollection.

For me, the chapters in my adult life have generally been segmented by employment. Perhaps this indicates how unexciting said life has been since I imagine frequent job changes are a regular part of most people's lives now, yet I'm also grateful for its normalcy. I'm blessed to have had a stable adult reality to date and am perfectly content to forego drama whenever possible.

Given the previous paragraphs it will come as no surprise that I am now at another turning point, a stepping stone to different segment of my existence with new skills to learn and people to meet. Along with this new employment opportunity comes questions of next steps. One never knows if they will like something until they try it, but, in the event that I feel the new position is a good fit, its permanence will enable me to look seriously at starting additional chapters – home ownership, settling down, investment etc.

In this climate of global environmental, political, economic and social uncertainty it's wise to not treat anything as guaranteed but nor should one hold off making the most of the present for fear of the future. A home base for security, with a degree of self-sufficiency in food and energy alongside comfort, is certainly worth striving for. As far as parenthood is concerned, I consider children out of the question unless I see more hope for humanity. It's unfair to bring those who did not create the instability we now face into its midst.

A less stressful job will enable me to pursue my side interests more fully, such as writing. I doubt it will ever be an occupation for financial independence but I want to share my creations with the world so continue weaving tales. Mine is merely one more voice yet the joy I gain from hearing others' stories is what makes me excited about getting up everyday, hence the reason I want to share mine.

A feeling of unity rather than division is crucial for all of us. Whether a story is based in reality or fiction, each one provides insight, highlighting internal and external challenges we all face. In addition, a well constructed story is engaging and wonderful. I will conclude this account with a quote from my youth that still speaks to me today.

“We are born into a world that is much bigger than ourselves, one that is both enormously frightening and enormously beautiful. Although we walk the path of our individual lives alone we are always surrounded by the love of those who came before and those who are currently with us. We are part of a continually expanding web of evolution in a world where energy is neither created nor destroyed and the spirits of all living beings share our struggles and joys – we only have to look beyond ourselves to see them.”

The below image captures this feeling perfectly.  I do not own it, nor am I aware of its creator.
