It's inevitable that, as I work on editing my first trilogy, observations and thoughts relating to it should find their way into these posts. One of the most interesting aspects of the story for me is the fact that it shares so little with the initial spark that gave it life.
Dreams have always fascinated me so I make a point of documenting them in case the scenarios create a stage on which my stories are formed. This is where the trilogy began. Selena's story came into being through a rather bad fanficiton. In my dream, I was in love with a street rat made famous by a 1992 Disney film but knew I had to let him go since he was destined to marry the princess. He did not understand why I started acting differently towards him as I attempted to put distance between us.
From this humble concept grew the plot of common girl turned assassin who plays a role in maintaining the status quo of her world. The scene that inspired the premise does not even appear until Book 2, and believe me when I say that the fact that there was a Book 2.... then a Book 3 was astonishing to me.
Stories generally take on lives of their own. The author is the vehicle, yet they do not always control in what direction the narrative goes. Selena wanted to tell her whole story and who was I to deny her that right? It's her journey of self-discovery alongside which are asked wider questions about humanity.
Since the premise deals with expectations, it makes sense that some of the conflict would also be linked to that topic. Selena's world is controlled by Abiders, spiritual leaders who subtly direct the actions of the populous to maintain order. Who does this order serve? Is it in humanity's best interest? Can we survive without it? These are all questions the protagonist contemplates and which I hope anyone who reads this story will also consider.
Fantasy is about exploring reality in a different way, providing the potential for insight relevant to one's own life in another's. Sometimes, the more divorced the scenarios from modernity, the better we can see what is truly important or where human folly thrives.
Writing The Rules trilogy has been exciting, tedious, frustrating and rewarding. I will attempt to publish it via the traditional methods and will record some of my experiences here for you. In the near future, I will share the first chapter of Book 1 with you and would love any feedback provided.
